A unidirectional fabric or tape in which E-glass roving (600 tex or 1200 tex) is laid strictly parallel in a single 0° or 90° direction, held by a very thin X-ply scrim (about 8 g/m²) or thermoplastic yarn (110 tex), giving a reinforcement ratio of about 95%–97%. Unidirectional fabrics are commonly 202–1000 g/m² in widths of 0.30, 0.50 and 1.00 m, while unidirectional tape is about 600 g/m², 5 cm wide and supplied in 100 running-metre rolls. Compatible with unsaturated polyester and epoxy systems, they are used for directed reinforcement and local strengthening of pipes, tanks, boats, wind energy structures and sporting goods.
