A regular hexagonal honeycomb core made from aramid paper (Nomex® type) that is resin-dipped, expanded and cured, giving low density with high specific strength and stiffness, plus impact resistance, flame retardancy and electrical insulation. Common cell sizes are 3.2/4.8/6.4/9.6 mm, densities 24–144 kg/m³, thicknesses 12/15/17/20/25/30 mm and panel sizes 1220×2440 mm or 1000×2000 mm, customizable; compressive strength is 0.52–13.2 MPa and shear strength 0.32–3.4 MPa in the L direction and 0.16–1.9 MPa in the W direction. It is widely used in sandwich structures for aerospace, high-speed craft, trains, radar, wind blades, hulls and racing car bodies.
